Ruth killed herself because she believes that her husband has an affair with another woman. Her daughter Karen, whispers something on her mother's ear a few seconds before Ruth dies. This whisper seemed to start the curse, and Chelsea, Karen's doll, became possesed with Ruth's spirit.
